Bicycle Travel Heroes

This week — a few of the many heroes of bicycle travel — those who work to inspire others to take to the road, who go above and beyond in working to improve bicycle travel, or who use bike travel to raise funds or awareness of a particular issue or need. First time visitor to this site?

Nominate Your Hero: Did you go on a challenging bicycle tour with an amazing group leader? Were you the recipient of an act of generosity on the trail? Do you frequent a bike shop that goes the extra mile to put you back safely on the road? Adventure Cycling is now accepting nominations for our 2008 bicycle travel awards. Learn more and nominate your hero.

Pedal for Peace in the Middle East: Follow the Women is “an international organisation comprised of approximately 500 ordinary women, from 40 different countries, who support peace and an end to violence in the Middle East.” Since 2004, it has organized a women’s ride through countries in the Middle East to promote peace in the region, crossing borders and conquering cultural differences by bicycle. Learn more.

Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is: Planet Bike not only sells some cool bike gear, they donate 25% of their profits to projects that improve conditions for bicycling across the U.S. Learn more.

Update! More Inspiring Stories Online: The online Adventure Cyclist features archive is now updated (current through May 2008). According to our membership Adventure Cyclist magazine is one of the top reasons for joining Adventure Cycling. Not surprising since the editorial team works very hard to produce some of the most inspiring bicycle travel stories you can find anywhere, complete with beautiful photography. Not a member? Learn about the many benefits of membership.

Janet Phillips with the Tahoe-Pyramid Bikeway: A runner-up from our 2006 bicycle travel awards season, Janet received an enthusiastic nomination from Bev Dummitt of Procrastinating Pedalers. “Those of us who are blessed enough to live along the Truckee River have often dreamed of a bike path along its course. Janet not only dreamed the dream, she's garnered support…to provide a blueprint for a 116-mile Bikeway from Lake Tahoe to Pyramid Lake. Janet has combined know how and political savvy to put our dreams into the every day reality.” Learn more.

An Adventure Called Bicycling: Check out this fun blog full of spirited entries dedicated to chronicling and inspiring any and all types of everyday bicycling adventures. “Whether it's trying to get lost for 10 hours on a road bike, picking up groceries on an Xtracycle, or moving out of an apartment by bicycle trailer…it's all an adventure.” Learn more.

Also pictured are Dr. Stephen Thomas and Mario Browne of the University of Pittsburgh’s Center for Minority Health (left and right respectively).

Tell us about your outstanding bicycle hero today! Nominate them for one of our 2008 Bicycle Travel Awards.
